Copying a date field from a child record to a parent

So I have a need to copy a date record up from a child record to a parent record. I can't seem to find a good way to do this easily... I considered an automation, but it seems like those are a little slower to fire. Is there another solution I'm not considering?

I don't suppose you ca just use a summary field and maybe an override field on the parent. Then it would instantly recalculate on save.

Not sure I've ever seen that. How would I use a summary field on a date?

    Something like this.
When the dates changes and it should be a timestamp type date you could create an extra date field to stamp the date in the child table and freeze it with the snapshot function

I'm going to be honest and say I didn't understand any of that. Never even heard of a "snapshot" function.

Let me explain a bit more of what I'm trying to accomplish. I have a parent record called "Opportunities." This is representative of a sale for us. We manufacture and install these jobs, so I am trying to create a linked system where I can simultaneously create a calendar entry for the shop to manufacture, and the scheduled date of install. It would be related like this:

    Install date (ex: 3/1/2020)
    Shop production date (2/28/2020)

If for some reason the install date were to change, I'd want the shop date to change automatically in relation to that, which I imagined would be a simple formula. Relationships are like this:

    Opportunities < Installations
    Opportunities <Productions

My thought was to have a date field under opportunities that could filter down to all child records. I called this field "Scheduled Start date." The issue I'm running into is that although I can share this field with the child records, I want the "installation" record to be able to control this date. I'll then create a formula date field under "productions" that's based on the "scheduled start date" minus a certain # of days.

Ideally, I'd create a "trip date" field under installations, and have "opportunities/scheduled start date" match that automatically. Then, when I changed the trip date, "scheduled start date" would change as well, and my other formula date fields would recalculate based on that field. Perhaps there's a better way to achieve this, but this was what I came up with as I'm planning it out.
