Counting Date/time field changes

  • 1.  Counting Date/time field changes

    Posted 01-10-2020 12:38

Is it possible to create a formula that will keep a running count of how often a date and time field changes?  I make daily uploads tracking hardware login information and I am attempting to track a fields times its updated.  I found an old formula that will supposedly track a text field change ( I will post bellow) but the text field may not change for some of my users.  In addition this formula does not seem to actually increase in values.

    var text value = [Last Login User];

    Count(
    Part($value,1,"]"),
    Part($value,2,"]"),
    Part($value,3,"]"),
    Part($value,4,"]"),
    Part($value,5,"]"),
    Part($value,6,"]"),
    Part($value,7,"]"),
    Part($value,8,"]"),
    Part($value,9,"]"),
    Part($value,10,"]"),
    Part($value,11,"]"),
    Part($value,12,"]"),
    )

Are you importing into a text field that has logging enabled?  What does your data look like in  [Last Login User]

On the text field options I have the following:

    Input type: User Input

Log the edits to this field, and show them on forms. Selected

Show the name and date on the same line as the entry.  Selected

Show new entries at the bottom of the field. Selected
Show full names instead of user names.  Selected
Show the time in addition to the date. Selected

My data is just a list of names.  examples: Bob Smith, Ellen Davis, etc.

Can you post an example of what is actually in the field on an example record?

OK, so we were not at all taking about the same thing.  I thought that you were updating a single record multiple times, but in fact you are adding new records.

    Your question said this

I make daily uploads tracking hardware login information and I am attempting to track a fields times its updated.

So now i do not understand what you are trying to do.  I think i need an example with simplified data and what response you expect for that data.

Based on what I have provided.  A simplified version I have the following fields:

Last Login D&T                  Last Login User
    01-10-2020 08:59 AM      Shelby Eggen

When I make an update to the User say the following:

Last Login D&T                  Last Login User
01-10-2020 08:59 AM      Shelby Eggen (changed to Dave Smith)

I need to count that change.  The result should show a count of 1.  The next change in user say:

Last Login D&T                  Last Login User
01-10-2020 08:59 AM      Dave Smith Changes to Shelby Eggen my count should show 2.

    Hopefully this makes more sense.

Chris, try a simple summary report summarizing he login date and name.  The report should generate your totals based on the # of groups sowing at the bottom of the summary report.

I'll also post a screen grab of the screen as well, since a copy/paste is a mess.

Now that I understand the question, I do not see an easy or native answer, given that you are importing the data.

Thanks for your help.  It was worth a shot, I might have to get creative to see if I can track this information.

I might have an idea but need to understand the question a little better.
You have records that get created?
Are you looking for changes to one specific field or a change to any list of fields?
Is their one field that stays the same and is related to another table? Perhaps mac address?
    We are counting these changes?

    Jason,
I'm not sure where you are going but yes maybe the answer is a simple summary report as a summary report will count the number of groups.

If you are connected to another table and the other table is the one not the many you can do a 'distinct count' off of the 'date created' field and set the conditions. Then if you want it on the other table do a lookup back. You could create a distinct count for each field if it had to be more detailed. If it is one record changing then you could use the date modified. It all depends on have a relationship.
