I've been tasked with creating a report to better manage available resources. To do this I need to take the entries from a task table with assigned users and figure out the following:

For any given user how many tasks do they have that fall between the planned start and planned finish date for any given day.

Once I know how to figure this out I could create a useful cart that shows how many tasks different users are working on each day over a given time frame.

Does a Task Assignment span more than 1 day?

Each task has only one one user assigned to it and spans from a planned start to a planned finish. If it helps any the planned finish is actually calculated as the planned finish plus a # of days in another field.

Let me try rephrasing the problem as well: for a given day how many tasks does a user have assigned to them where they will be actively doing the work?
I think that an <ask the user> filter would work on a Summary Report type.

As I recall the best user experience is to create another field in your Task Table called [Enter First Date] with the formula of Task End Date.

And the do the opposite for the other pair of fields.

Then put those two fields as your ask the user fields.

The filters should be

Where [Enter Start Date] is on or after <ask the user>

And the opposite for the other field.
Let me know if it works.

I'll try the Summary Report, though I'm not sure I follow you explanation of using an additional field.
The extra fields are not necessary, but I think will avoid user confusion.
