Add new button includes default text from the parent table

I would like my "Add a new Record" button to pull the title of the parent record and use it as default text in the new record (on the child table). I need this field to then be editable.

example:
Parent table title: New Opportunity
Child table editable field default text: New Opportunity - (user added text here)

This cannot be a lookup field because the user then needs to add additional text after the Opportunity title.

Thanks!!!

No problem, just pull in the default text on the look up field and then I have a form rule which says
If my input field is blank then change my input field to the value in my look up field

That way your input field will populate automatically but you can override.

Yes. But a word of caution as I just tried this in a way that used many such fields - all in an effort to avoid complete re-engineering to an existing and in use application.

You can have only so many fields that you do this with. On this particular form I was already doing quite a bit of field control and changes -- so I ran right into the limit on the form.

MAX 20 lookups, proxies, summary, calc fields on a form.

Moral of the Story: spend more time designing the app and thinking it through before pointing an clicking!  ;-)

Sometimes you can examine your form rules and find ways to eliminate using a derived field in a rule.
