[The Quick Base Knowledge Base is your library of frequently-asked questions that help you better customize your apps to solve your business problems.]

Business processes often include plenty of steps that need to be handled by an actual person. Things like reviewing a document or approving a request, which we know a computer can’t do for us.  While these tasks are critical, it’s important to remember that they are only one half of the equation.  Once you’ve thought about the best way to facilitate any manual work involved in your process, your next step is to think about the many routine steps which you can have the system can handle for you. Whenever you find opportunities to automate portions of your workflow, you will not only save time, you will also ensure that your unique business processes are executed accurately and consistently.

Once you’ve found a task or process that makes sense to offload onto a computer, then the next challenge is to determine how to implement that in your app. Quick Base has a number of different tools that can help but knowing which of those is best for your specific needs can be a bit tricky.

The first feature of this type that most users encounter is Email Notifications, which fortunately have a very clear and specific purpose.  Beyond Notifications there are 3 additional Quick Base features which offer significantly more power and flexibility but can also be harder to distinguish. These features are Actions, Webhooks, and Automations.

As the newest feature, Automations open up entirely new opportunities to drive efficiencies, allowing you to chain together steps and logic in ways that you may not have realized were possible. The best part is that you’re building these workflows with clicks instead of code, which will radically simplify the way you solve problems and get work done.

So how do you know if the best option for your workflow is an Automation, or if it makes more sense to use an Action or a Webhook?  To help you answer that question, read the breakdown below:

I really like the automating workflow options.   If I choose Automations to run Daily, what time of day does it run?
In my experience they start shortly after midnight of the time zone that the app is set for.
