Bar chart colors changing

I have a couple of different bar charts that are used to show our workload schedule. The intent is for the bars to represent a heat map (red > yellow > green) to show associates the expected due date for their work.

I can set the custom colors on the bar chart, but they never seem to stay those colors for very long. They will alway change to various other colors. Some colors seem to hang around, while others will change.

I can't see how this would be expected behavior, because it makes it nearly impossible to communicate to associates via a bar chart if the colors continually change.

Two things of possible note:

  • The field that the bars represent is a formula text field
  • There are seven potential outcomes of the text field, and not all are present at any given time in the bar chart

Does anyone know how to make the colors stay consistent?

I believe the colour change occurs if the item associated with that colour goes away then comes back. Example if a status field can say good, bad, horrible and ugly - I assign colours to each one then there happen to be no records left at a given moment in time for one of the - say ugly - then when another record comes along that has that status the colour will be reassigned. I don't know how to address this but it would be a very good thing indeed!

Good afternoon Scott,

When setting up any kind of chart, you probably want to wait to change the color swatches till you complete all the settings (filters, etc.) As Richard pointed out, when you set the swatches to the respective selections, and you then change the filters, it will remove the item from being shown. Then when you remove the filter, QuickBase will automatically assign it a default color.

This will also occur if you change the filters for that chart in the future. If you also edit the outcomes, it will also change the color swatches.

If you are still having trouble with this case, please feel free to submit in a new support ticket and our team will definitely be able to help you.

Have a great day!

Natalya, while this does explain why this happens, I believe that Intuit should look at the possibility of allowing us to permanently define the colours used for a specific table, independent of whether all options for the key field are available at any given time. While initially this looks like simple cosmetics, it is actually very important when dealing with Pie and Bar graph reports to customers or management. GREEN means good Red means bad is ingrained in their DNA and we need to be able to generate reports quickly without having to reset colours each time.
Thanks,

Agreed. Plus one. It's nutty that the assigned colors changes every time you edit a report. Should only change if the axis values displayed are changed.

I agree this is annoying - I need to set a legend record just to get the colours - its not good enough

Colors are usually used to give meaning, not just to be pretty.

Hi David, maybe what you are not thinking is that if I want more than one graphic to show the info in different ways I need them to have the same colors so the info is easier to understand..
BTW - No need to comment to say that
