Can I limit the number of users in List-User field only to 3 or 4? Adding 4 separate fields would be tedious and I want it only to be 1 field in a form.

You can make a formula checkbook to become true when the "count" of users is 4, and then a form rule that make that field read only when said checkbook is true.
You'd also want a manual checkbook and form rule to reset the list, otherwise you'd be locked.  Just one idea.  Rainier, any connection to rainier arms?

Thanks for the reply. How will a user delete 1 from the list to accommodate another if the list will be read-only? I don't have any connection to rainier arms.

The manual checkbook added to reset it would have to change it all to blank, and then add the other 3 back.  Not the cleanest, but I don't see any other way to force a limit.
4 separate fields might be the cleaner solution.  Then you could have a formula text field to put all the users names in a list.  So for reporting they'd all appear in one spot...
