We are a small contract manufacturer and use QB to store information about many hundreds of customer-designed cable and harness assemblies.  Each assembly has a  unique name.  Each unique assembly has a single document project, and also one or more assembly projects each related to an specific instance in which we receive an order to make it.  We receive purchase orders with up to 200 assemblies listed on them, and each of the assemblies has its own document project to which we need to save related assembly documents, related price quotes sent to the customer, copies of related purchase orders, and copies of completed manufacturing travelers.  At the moment each document, drawing, copy of quote, copy of PO, copy of traveler, is saved one at a time to QB.  There has GOT to be a way I can use a spreadsheet to identify a document and its location in a subdirectory and then indicate the documents projects to which it should be attached.  Can you direct me to where I can learn what i need to know to do this? Thank you, bm

Is it necessary to upload these documents to QuickBase or are you looking to have a link in QuickBase that would point to the local file server where the document is stored?

Well, there is no local server because we are part of amazon's cloud....doo-dah.... but I think what you're suggesting is what I'm after.
We are a "paperless" office, so all doc's have to be uploaded to QB so all questions about an order, or an assembly, can be answered by going to that project in QB.  So we need links in QB to all these doc's.  I noticed, however, that the approach we take now results in the same purchase order, covering multiple assemblies, is being recorded in QB multiple times.  At least I assume that's the situation, because I found a PO I uploaded had two different document numbers, one for each of the two assemblies ordered.  I would imagine we are using up a lot of storage space saving multiple copies of the same document, and I know we are spending a lot of time going through the multiple steps to save copies of the PO as private document tasks associated with each of the assembly projects.  At the moment, I am slogging through uploading copies of the PO to 193 different assembly doc projects.  It seems to me there must be a way to save a doc to a separate database (pardon my mangling of the terminologies, I'm very new...) only one time, and then use a spreadsheet to add links to that document to multiple doc projects at one time, using an excel spreadsheet.  thanks, bm

Let's take this step by step.

If you are loading multiple copies of the same document  then we need to "stop the insanity".  The original document should be uploaded to the highest level Parent and then use a link to show a link to that document the same as if you were simply pulling down any other lookup field from that parent.

The format for the link that you can put in the parent and then use as a lookup down to any children would be

URLRoot() & "up/" & dbid() & "/a/r" & [Record ID#] & "/e30/v0"

where the 30 in the e30 is the field ID# of which field has the file attachment.

Maybe that alone will obviate your perception that you need some kind of mass uploads capability.
