Can the reference field be a formula?

Can the reference field (related Parent Record ID#) be a formula? I want the "related parent record" field to be automatically populated based on another field rather than selected manually.

I do not want to use a form rule because sometimes child records are added in bulk using the Import/Export feature. For this reason, I want the "Related Record" field to be automatically populated using a formula.

Is this possible?

If not possible, is there a way to use a formula in the "default value" box, so that I could set the default value of the related record to a value in another field?

Thanks in advance.

Can I change the "Related Quote | Numeric (Reference)" field to be a formula instead of a value that users have to select manually from a drop-down?

The reference field on the "right side" of a relationship can certainly be a formula. You would definitely want to go with a formula as form rules can sometimes not fire correctly, and of course they do not work on Grid edit mode.

Thanks Mark; I added additional details and a snapshot just to make sure I was communicating correctly.  I thought that changing the field type from "Numeric (Reference)" to "Formula - Numeric" would break the relationship.  Is this not so?  Thanks again.

No, it will not break the Relationship.

But any time you are afraid to make a change like that, or for example changing the Key field in a table with relationships where it will come up with all kinds of scary warnings, you can make a copy of your app and make the change there, just to give you peace of mind. Then just carefully delete the "Copy Of" app.

Thank you, it worked perfectly!
