Colorize proxy field background based on checkbox selection

I have a "Quote Request" form with an embedded child table of "Request Items," and on the child table, each item has a "Vendor 1", Vendor 2", "Vendor 3" drop-down field. Each of those drop-down fields is a proxy (with an individual relationship for each) to a list of "Vendors" in another app. Next to each vendor selection there is a checkbox labeled "Select as Vendor." When the decision is made to select a vendor for manufacturing, our expediter check the box next to the vendor that he chose, and all the other vendor fields are hidden to de-clutter the form.

Although the other vendors are hidden on the child form, when viewing the parent record, the embedded report still shows a column for each vendor field, which I don't want. I want the "losing" vendors to go away on the embedded child report so it only shows the expediter's selections.

If I was able to have more than one calculated column, I think I could do it. So then I thought, what if the losing vendor names were just blacked out using field colorization? So if vendor 1 checkbox=true, all the other vendor names (Dropdown fields) get a black background color on the report.

Is there a way to apply a background color to the vendors fields based on the checkbox state?

(I hope the screenshot helps, had to cross out sensitive information)

Thanks.

If you want to have a report of just the selected vendor, then I suggest that you make a calculated formula field for the field and show that on the report.  Cell colorization is not so easy and its not really a good solution for this problem anyways as just showing the selected vendor will be the cleanest reports.

I need the report to display all the fields though, because as a vendor may have been chosen for an item, there may be many more items below it that do not have a vendor selected yet.

Here is the help text on background shading.  You will need to have mirror formula fields to show on the report and apply background shading to them.

What if I told you that we use grid edit to enter the information into said report?

You cannot colorize in Grid edit mode.
