Dynamic form rule to fire when user field is not blank

I need to define a dynamic form rule to fire when a non-blank value is selected in a user field - i.e. any user is selected.

In the form rule definition I can't do this - I can add a condition that the field is equal to or not equal to a specific user account, but not 'not equal to empty'. I tried adding a formula checkbox field that would be checked when the user field is not empty, but I guess this isn't modified until the record is saved (so no good for use in the dynamic form rule).

Any suggestions?

Make a formula User field called

[null User]

And leave the formula blank

Then the Form Rule can fire when your User field is equal to the value in the field [null User]
