You cannot control the color of the drop down choices.  However, if you have a relationships to control that drop down, then you can specify any report to use for the drop down, and so you can make a report called drop down choices of active Items with just Active items, so that the discontinued items will not be offered as choice.

It seems like there should be a way to write a formula that says "if the check box is checked then show this item in red"

You can have the drop down list show any fields you like in any sort. So you can show the Active / drop status in words. But I don't believe there is a way to color.

Sorry I think maybe I am wording my question incorrectly. I have a table of just item codes and some are discontinued items. How can I write a formula showing the disco items in red? They are in a table and have a check box that once checked it keeps the reps from seeing those items and I would like them to still show in red since Admin can still see them.

I understand you want to show them in red. It's not possible.
