Have Inserted Row Keep Place Without Having to Renumber List?

I have a report for a Tasks table and user wants to be able to insert a new record anywhere in the list and it keep position in that list without having to update a reorder everything in a 'Task #' field (unless there's a way to do this easily -- for example, Excel lets you drag a renumbering formula down a column).

The solution can't require an add-in service, but willing to learn scripting if necessary.

Thank you!

I assume that somehow tasks get created and initially they are in the right sequence.  Can you tell me how the initial Tasks are created?  Are they manually added one by one or are they being imported off a Master Prohect?

Yes, there are created by importing a spreadsheet which has a "Task #" field.

The problem is that after importing to QuickBase it is way more difficult to reorder this field. In Excel the user just drags a renumbering formula down the column.

Ok, so lets start with the obvious so I understand the issue.  If there is an imported column of numbers with Task number from 1-10, why not just add a Task and set its task number to 5.5.  So it will sort between 5 and 6.  ie just Sort on Task number.

We've been doing that, but user doesn't want to continue to do this indefinitely.

OK, well maybe i do have an idea.  How about a button to launch of of from the previous Task labelled "Add task after this one".  It would add a new task and set the task to be numbered up by 0.1 from the launched off task.
