I want users to be able to enter a number into a designated field that will add that number to the previous entry.

I suggest that you set up a child table and have your users add children and then show a total on he Parent Record.

Ok, Thank you.  How do I get the total from the child table to appear in a field on the parent table?

In the Relationships that you will create http://www.quickbase.com/user-ssistance/Default.html#about_relationships.html

The relationship will let you build a Summary field which can do a Total of any field on the child records.  That field will end up on the Parent record.
