How do user names get created?

I'm looking in the User list for an app, but when I mouse over several of the user names, I see the user has no name. These are registered users.

Similarly, in my QuickBase account > My Apps > Users with Access, most of our users have no user name.

Are these people skipping filling in a field when they receive the QuickBase invite to register? How do we assign these people user names?

Thanks!

Individual Users adjust these settings by clicking the top right dropdown where their name is listed > My Preferences.

There they can set their First & Last Name, and a User Name.  The User Name can be used during login, rather than having to type their entire email address every time.  They can also change their password there.

User Name only affect their login, and usually doesn't display anywhere else in the app

Their First and Last Names are what is used all the "User List" field types.  Default as "Last Name, First Name"

As a note; sometimes Usernames can trip you up when building formula fields which display outputs from the User such as a UserToEmail([user]) formula which won't display any values; so I have to hard-code the outputs to specifically look for a User. i.e.

If([User]=ToUser("someone@somwhere.com"),"someone@somewhere.com",UserToEmail([User]))
