How to disconnect activities and contacts from a company's name?

So I have my companies, contacts and activities all right now connected to each other by the company name.  However, I want to change all the company records to eliminate the word "inc' and "LLC" from their name for mass mailing purposes- however, if I do that, the contacts and activities disappear from the records because they're related to a company name that no longer exists.  I had had a QB expert once before change how records were related, so the primary relationship was on their company name, now I want to change that back so I can keep things all related.  Is there a way to change the name of the company such that the name will adjust also in the related contacts and activities, rather than disconnecting from them?

You will need to change the Key field of the Companies table to be the [Record ID#] field.  That is best practise for just the situation that you are encountering.

When you make that change it will give you all kinds of warnings, but it will work.  But if you have not ever done this before,  you may want to do this on a Copy of your app first.

The main thing that you need to adjust is that on each child table, you will want to ensure that the Company Name is set as the Proxy field for the Record ID #.  You set that on the field which will be the new relationship field.  It will be renamed something like [Related Company ref] automatically and you can edit that to change it to the more traditional [Related Company] name.

Then ensure that each child table form is using the [company name] field on the form, and not [Related Company]

If you want personal assistance making this change you can contact me via the information in my profile.
