I might be labeled "calculated column" and not "variance"

i'm sorry I didn't get what you mean. I named my calculated column as "Variance" but I am unable to show it on the report.
Check the bottom of the drop down list for a field called <calculated column>

What drop down list? I am on the report settings page, I have these sections: Basics, Summarize data, groupings and crosstabs, sorting, Filters, Drill Down report.
... in Summarize Data.  You seem to be wanted to create a new field for this report and Summarize it.  What do you see if you add a third field to Summarize?  What do you see as the last choice in the drop down list of fields to summarize?

However, note that once you find that on the drop down list and get it on your report, depending on your data, it may not give you the mathematical results that you expect.

The reason is that you cannot to math on summary columns on a report, only on detail records.  So that would be an Average of the individual Variance records, but the subtraction of the columns on the report that you are looking at.

I can explain more once you get that column on your report.
