Hi, I would like to create a checkbox formula to identify project category for miscellaneous projects  to set value to TRUE if Project name field contains Misc% in the name.

I used this – in the checkbox formula field

If(Contains([Project #],"MISC"),true, false) – but the checkbox does not work,  it is disabled.

Could someone please help?   Is this formula check box will automatically set each new project that contains MISC% in the name as YES ?

Thank you so much

You can use Begins

If(Begins([Project #],"MISC"),true,false)

You would not need the If() statements since Contains() returns a checkbox /boolean value.
What type of field is [Project #]? Maybe this is what you need if [Project #] is not already a text field:
Contains(ToText([Project #]), "MISC")
Based on Mark's input try this::
Begins([Project #], "MISC")
