I want a field to get marked as required before saving, if another text field has data in it.

I have a text field that acts as a signature line (with log edits turned on) If this field has data in it, before the record is saved, I want another field to become required. Somehow the Rule to check if this signature line is not blank is not working. 

To circumvent that, I created a formula checkbox - Signature 1 that gets checked if the signature line has any text. The formula checkbox is working well but gets updated only after the record is saved ...thereby not making my other field required before the save.

Please help!!

Have you tried making a checkbox that populates when the Signature Box is populated (before saving); and then making the other field required when the checkbox is checked?  You would also need to (on save) uncheck the checkbox that flags this required field.
