I am trying to populate a field with a text string by checking date fields that are not null. In other words something like: If( not IsNull([DateField A]), "Text A", ( not IsNull([DateField B]), "Text B"), etc.  Is it possible to do this?

You were close

If(
not IsNull([DateField A]), "Text A",
not IsNull([DateField B]), "Text B"))

I suggest  lining up your formula vertically just for readability

I appreciate the quick response, it actually fixed the error I was getting but it didn't solve my problem. I'm sure because I didn't explain it well. So here goes another attempt: Basically I am trying to have one field that reflects the various stages of a project. In this example I have the following fields: [Permit Sent], [Permit Received], [Permit Approved], all of which are individual date fields. I would like the state of the [Current Permit Status] Field to change as these dates are filled in. So when the [Permit Sent] date is filled in, the  [Current Permit Status] Field would show "Permit Sent". Subsequently when the [Permit Received] Field date is filled in, I would like the text in the[Current Permit Status] Field to change to "Permit Received". Thus I can create a Dashboard chart that shows a count of how many Permits have been sent, received, etc.
Thanks again for any help
no problem, just test them in reverse order and it will return the first one that is true.

IF(

not Isnull([Permit Approved]), "Permit Approved",

not IsNull([Permit Received]), "Permit Received",

not IsNull([Permit Sent]), "Permit Sent")
