Preventing creation of duplicate record

I have  stores which are related to projects. I would like to allow users to create projects themselves. But I need to ensure that they only create projects where no such projects exist previously. Unlike other posts I have seen on the subject where a field can be made unique, in my case much of the info remains same. In other words, when someone looks up a store and add a project, they have to use a category, followed by other project attributes. One option is to show previous projects in a section (again not too sure how is this accomplished as I am already in a project form) but would prefer some sort of warning. Will appreciate some help.

There must be some set of fields which taken together will be unique (or distinct). Just concatenate them into a string using a delimiter character that will not be found in any of the fields:

[field1] & "~" & [field2] & "~" & [field3]

Then using native features or script make this formula field unique. A script solution will provide a better workflow as you can detect uniqueness when any of the constituent fields change rather then waiting for the native uniqueness to happen when the form is submitted.
