Two related tables each has a form, how do I copy the information from one record to the same related fields in a new record on the other table?

Table - "Investigations" & Table - "Service Orders". Many of the same fields

Related in that one investigation can have many service orders. On the form for Service Orders, inside the record I have a button that creates a new record in the Investigations table. This brings up a new blank record. How can I populate the information from the service order record into the same fields for the new Investigation record without having to retype all the information?

Have you set up the Relationship where One Service Order can have Many Investigations?  If so, then edit that relationship to lookup fields from the Parent Service Order down to the Child Investigation record.

yes i have the realtionship setup. I am a beginner here with QB, once i get to the edit relationships page I am quite lost, not sure where to begin. I don't want new fields the fields are already on both forms
So what you will want to do is to delete the data entry fields that you created on the child Investigations record (which were duplicates of those in the Parent Service Orders), and in their place, edit the Relationship to bring down those fields directly from the Parent Service Orders.

They will not be editable on the Investigations record, only up on the Parent Service Orders record.  But they way they will always match.. Ie, if you change a name or address on the Service Order, it will automatically update all its Investigations..

Still not able to figure this out, feel like I have tried everything. I deleted the relationship at this point and am back at sq 1. Sometimes we start with the investigation form and would want an "add service order" button to open that form and bring with it the text from the fields that are the same. On the other hand sometimes we start from the Service Order form and would want an "Add investigation" button to open that form and bring with it the text from the fields that are the same. I just don't even know where to start here
Rebuild the relationship and bring down the lookup fields to the form.

If you are working with an investigation record and find you need to create a service order to get those fields populated, then choose the Service order from the drop down list of service orders in the investigation record. The last choice will be to add new service order.
