I have a role that requires to activate a project.  In the process that requires that a form in the child form opened and the role holder adds some financial info.  He also needs to add a project number being looked up from projects (parent).

Is there some way to update the parent look up field?

Is there a reason that the user cannot simply also edit the Parent Record to update the Project number on the Parent?

This user is really involved only to ensure that project gets funded. Hence the reason that I am taking the user to cost management form. Where user is required to set up the project in SAP and then reflect the project number and the budget. I suppose project number can be updated but then user will be jumping between forms.

Is there just going to be 1 Child record?

Also is the Project number field numeric or a text field type?

Thanks. There are many children but in this case it is going to be one child record at a time. Project number is text field.

Do you know how to make a reverse relationship? If so you could float up the project # from the first child with a project number up to the Parent record.  On the Parent, you could have a formula to use that if the Parent does not have one.

Yes I have used this but I consider this as an overkill. But I might just do that. //////but this is certain that no lookup  fields can be edited in child table.

Right, there is no way to edit a look up field on the child record and somehow force that value back up to the parent.

I mean if you wanted to get crazy I suppose you could update the field on the child and then upon saving the child you could have a Web hot kick in and edit the project number on the parent but  well that would work it would be pretty unusual to go to those jumps to do that. But I guess it would work.
