Mark I have a similar issue to what you have already dealt with in a  thread on the subject. As I wanted to attach a file, I thought I would add as a new post. I did use the solution but since I am checking for a couple of things as well beside user field not being null, I still cannot fire a message for user to add users in the recipient field. Any idea if I am missing anything.

Sorry, I am not understanding your question. can you try to restate your question more clearly?

As the screenshot shows,  I am testing for few conditions to be met and one ios to ensure that the user field does have a name in it.  To achieve this I created [null user] field as you suggested in another post.  But I am unable to fire the message.
The screen shot I see does not seem to be testing for a user field being null.  Aside from that, I do not know what you mean by

"But I am unable to fire the message."

Are you asking how to set up an email notification which fires when the record is saved?  Or are you looking to abort the save with a message?  Or are you looking to just have a field be required on the form.

Thanks. I managed to find a solution.  I used a formula field to test if a user is there or not and then used that instead of null user option. It works well.  Thank you for kindly looking into this.   I was merely trying to issue a warning to user.
