field editing options

So, I am trying to make it to where I have a submitter, and then an approver, and others can see it, but the only people who can edit the request is done by the submitter/approver. Do I need to create different roles for each approver so that X can change only requests with their name as the approver or submitter, or is there another way?

    You should be able to do this using Custom Permisison Rules for the Roles these users are in.  Watch it gets too complicated to do in the Custom Rule you can always make a formula checkbox field called  [Allowed to Edit?] and then do the simple Custom Permission Rule on that checkbox formula field.
