Pipelines - Remote API returned authentication error when enabling user Pipeline

Recently I built a pipeline to do a decimal-to-hex conversion between two fields. The pipeline worked properly when running under an administrator account, but failed when the same pipeline was built by a user account. When the user account tried to enable the pipeline, the user would receive a toast notification "Remote API returned authentication error" like the one below.

After some trial and error, I determined that enabling the "Edit field properties" permission on the target table for the pipeline owning user solved the problem.
