Vertical field elements in same row form

I was wondering if it was possible to have vertically stacked fields that correlate to the same row in a form. I want to prevent too much horizontal space when filling a form.

The last column has 3 elements for example in the image below that need to be vertical rather than horizontal.

Is there a way to format editable fields?

Like a checkbox, input text, drop down etc or is rich text html just to display information

Unlike Excel, you cannot format plain text fields.  If they are Rich Text fields , then the user can format as they input.  Or else you can have a new field of type Formula Rich Text and it can format a regular Text field or field(s) to be a Rich Text, as in the example formula field that Jeremy posted above.
