Create Modal on hover

I have some (ok several) status  fields that indicate the readiness of various parts of the project and would like to create a modal that will appear on hover and close when the mouse is off the field.  What is the best way to accomplish this?  At the moment mobile is not a factor, but I would prefer a design that would also work in the mobile world too.

    This may not be exactly what you are envisioning, but there was a part of a presentation at last year's Empower that covered fields expanding on hover. I have not tried it myself, but seemed like a cool trick that has stuck in my mind.

      Thank you for the suggestion.  This while this wasn't exactly what I'm looking for, it did provide some ideas for other areas of the app.
