Is it possible to give an error message right after entering TEXT in % field....instead of until trying to save

One option for this would be to create a formula field that is next to this field on the form that will specifically check for the % field containing any text instead of % and flash a warning on the form. That would allow you to display a warning on the form when a letter is entered instead of a number.
