Is there a way to check if a record is in use currently?

I have multiple users who access an application and are presented with a table. Each record in the table needs to be accessed and a field value needs to be changed in the record by a user. I want to prevent 2 users from accessing the same record. 

Is there a formula to check or change status of a records when it is clicked and is in view or edit mode so that it is removed from the table and not visible to other users?
