Making a button to perform API_SetDBVar action

Question

Is there a way to set a button that will set an app variable to a value in a field? I know about the API_SetDBVar, what I do not know is just how it is suppose to be written out in a Formula Rich Text Field in order to perform the proper function.

Any help is appreciated.
