Running count of entries

I need to be able to keep a running count of the order of entries during a time period.  That needs to be based on the date the record was entered.  (along with possible other filters, but the order of entry by date is important)

For example, a user enters a record on day 1 and it's marked "1" in a field,
Another record is entered later that day and it is marked "2"​,
etc.

if that was associated to a report number in another field, say, every report number would re-start at 1...

So for example; report 555
(first entered) has 1 in the field
(second entered) has 2 in the field
etc. to 5...

then report 556 
entry 1 (first entered),
etc.
