Types of fields that can be proxy

I am hoping to use a user-entry text field as a proxy, but it doesn't show as an option. What are the requirements for a field to be an option for a proxy field? I've tried with a reference field with type Text and with a reference field with type Numeric.

    The concept of a proxy field is to present a more appropriate field to display to the user when choosing a record from the parent table.  Any lookup field in the relationship may be used as a Proxy.

      That actually really helped it click for me, thank you Mark. I had thought that some fields in the table were options- it makes sense that instead it's all the fields in the relationship. TY!
