Roles and Permission Access Not Working

I am trying to assign a certain role the ability to edit certain fields. I've checked the advanced tab on the specific table and have verified the users only have this role assigned, however despite this the role and the users still have the ability to edit fields. How is this possible?? How do I fix this??

    You set "role access permissions" down at the field level.  Table level is simply that, table-level permissions on RECORDS.  If you only want a role to edit specific fields, customize the field properties and set the role access permissions there.
