Format date to Month/year for graph

I'm making a bar graph and I want to display totals by month and year. Could someone tell me how to format a datetime field to display as month/year in the report? Any assistance would be appreciated.

The chart should allow you to summarize by Month.  If you do not like how that appears, can you tell me how you want it to appear?

I do not see any option at all in the graph to summarize like that. I  want the month/year on the bottom and then the bar(s) over each month/year showing the totals for each type.
