Logged Field with only the User Name and Date?

Question

I typically use a Multiple Choice field to log a user selection. So, perhaps I will have them select 'Approved' and it will save: User Name: Date Approved.

Is there a way to simply have the user name and date logged? Essentially, I want the same as the user clicking a checkbox and logging that.

My initial idea is to just make a formula field and strip everything out I dont want. Is that the best method?

Yes, use formulas to strip out what you want. It works how it works so just decide what you want to display in view mode by the way of formulas.
