Question

Updating parent record when child record changes

Hello,

The feature to insert screen shots into discussion threads still doesn't work (already reported) so I will describe it here.

Parent table: Sample

Child table: Chases

I have a daily automation that works perfectly but I want it to occur when the record changes, not just once per day.

Samples has a summary field {Count of compliant chases] and a field [Overall compliance status].

When a Sample has a [Count of compliant chases] greater than or equal to 1, and the existing [Overall compliance status]="Not compliant", I need the automation to change the [Overall compliance status] to "Compliant".

I've tried so many things to get this to work, for example:
  • building an automation to fire when the data changes, exactly with the same criteria as the daily automation (no error messages, just never fires)
  • tried having the user click 'edit' on the parent form and save after the summary field changes (neither an automation nor a form rule do the requested action)
  • tried having the user click 'edit' on the parent form, leave that open while they then edit and save the child record, then save
It's weird because I'm following the instructions in the Help section. There must be something about my tables that is causing this?
TIA

An Automation will only fire when a record is edited and saved.  It will not fire on a record change which occurs though the passage of time or via a summary field or lookup field changing.

You have not said what record type you are triggering on.  You should be triggering on when the table for compliant chases is edited, and if their are criteria based on a summary fields from parent records or regular fields from the parent , get those looked up down to the child so that you can filter your Automation trigger to only trigger when it should trigger.

Hi Audrey,

Sorry to hear you are still running into an issue with inserting screenshots into the Community threads. I have reached out again directly to you to see if we can take a look at that together since we are having others not run into the same issue and want to see how to reproduce it. Please let me know if you aren't getting the emails we are sending and I can find another way to connect with you.
