When does this line show and when does it not?

I have numerous multiple choice fields that are logged. They are also read only (filled in using button pushes). In edit mode, see picture below. One multiple choice field shows a line, the others do not. Does anyone know when it shows the gray line? Not a big deal, but messing with my OCD!

    It may be a rich text field that has "show" conditions that are not being met, causing the gray area. He's an example of an a rich text button field on a form
