Well, I really do not want the users seeing [Record ID#] at all when they didn't used to. But at least the exception you suggest will allow the app to be usable. And of course if there are complaints from users, the fix is to use a proper reference proxy.
But what I do not get in your suggestion is why, if the report being used on the form is what the user should be seeing, then why show the Record ID at all? If I wanted to show the Record ID, I would have listed that column on the record picker report.
