Offline Location

Hiiii! I'm currently trying to transition a department in my company from Fulcrum to QB, the only issue I'm running into is capturing a location point while in offline mode. I'm told Fulcrum can pin a location even in no signal areas and then queue for later upload. Can someone explain this sorcery to me? Possibly suggest workarounds? Thanks in advance!

  • The (free) Quickbase mobile app downloaded from the App Store or Google Play does know a GPS location and can populate an address field.  I just did a test with my iPhone in Airplane mode and it worked.  I'm actually not sure where it got the address from, but it hose the correct street and postal code and was only off by 1 house number  - i live at #11 and it gave #9.

The mobile app can take data entry while off line, but not run reports or other queries on the Quickbase cloud, when off line.  The data entry for adding records is stored locally on the device and when it's necessary the Internet will synchronize and upload the data.

Obviously this offline capability is only going to work in QuickBase with the mobile app and not when trying to access QuickBase on a mobile device because if you have no Internet connection then obviously webpages are not going to populate.

I'm sure there is a bunch of information somewhere on using the mobile app but in general yes it is possible to do data entry on the mobile app when off the Internet.

Hi Mark! So I just tested my iPhone in airplane mode, via the QB app, and the address fields were there for manual input, but there was no option to grab the location. Use case is for crews in sometimes VERY rural areas, we really need a lat/long pin drop.

I think that the Off line mode requires some setup.  i have not actually used in a real situation, I  just payed with it when the feature came out.

But I don't think that Mobile has the functionality to populate lat and longs.  It's a shame that the Mobile development did not progress to include that feature.  I suppose that you could double check with support, but I never recall hearing that it could do that.

The address fields street 1 and street 2 does accept the input of a lat and a long respectively, and they will work on native maps.  But how do you get the coordinates?  You can "ask Siri" where am I? and she will pop up a screen with the lat longs which can be easily copy and pasted.   But alas, no internet means no Siri.

I'm sure there are GPS type apps put there which can easily expose the Lat longs that could be copy pasted.

The other option is to go to an outfit like Trinity.  www.trinityis.com  They do mobile app development with custom interfaces.  Maybe they have a solution.
