20 value limit for List fields workaround?

I am trying to create a list field for U.S. states. However, users need the ability to select more than 20. Is there any elegant workaround beyond creating 50 checkboxes. Thanks. ------------------...

Maybe split the states list into two fields and combine them for display purposes?
