Any shortcut to make an entire record 'Read Only'

I have a record with a status field.  When the status = x I would like to make the entire record ready only.    Curious if there is a shortcut to do this other than making a fairly large form rule that sets all fields to read only.  Also I would not like to involve different roles to solve this.  Thanks.

    The shortcut in this case would be to use the roles. Is there a reason that wouldn't be a viable option? There isn't functionality to make the entire form read only in mass at current outside of roles based on a condition in the way described. Even form rules will have to have exceptions with other rules that will make that a difficult long term solution.

    Just thinking loud: is there a way to duplicate the form with view only fields and apply to a record or condition?
