Can a formula be used to obtain the number of slides in a PowerPoint?

In short, no. Outside of a fully custom solution from a partner I cannot think of anything that could extract that data from a deck. Further, a cursory look around did not net ANY solution to extract total slides in a deck outside of PowerPoint itself.
