Condtional Dropdown not working until record is saved

I have a lot of conditional dropdowns that work just fine.

One of mine, will not work until I save the record (it will be grayed out and state 'Please select the xxx field',), however I can stare at the conditional field and see that it has populated.

I think it has something to do with the conditional field itself - where it comes from through lookups etc, somehow it's not being recognized until I save. I can't put my finger on the issue.

Thoughts?

Update: This really just confuses me more but perhaps someone has a theory. I have a required field on the form (text field).

If I type something in the required field FIRST, and then Select my related field (which populates the conditional field), now I can select from the conditional Dropdown. Alternatively, if uncheck the box to make that field required, the conditional dropdown works.

If I don't have my required field filled in, the conditional dropdown does not work. The required field is in no way related to my conditional dropdown.

Update 2: If I require the field via the checkbox on form properties, the conditional drowpdown works fine. If I require the field via field properties, conditional dropdown is affected
