Different Ideas for Sorting and Grouping By Month Name

What different techniques do people use for sorting and grouping by month, but also having them in the correct order? For example, I have a formula field that changes the month/year to January 2021...

I either create a field on the format YYYY-MM-DD or I create a field which is an actual formula date field type and I make it be the first of the month.  Then I group by that date field, by month.
