Dynamically Change Related User Field

I have a related user field that I want to be able to change on an action (say a checkbox approval checked). More specifically, I want to change the related user field to the current user when a checkbox is checked.

My thought was to create a second field (user) and set it to the current user. Then simply use a dynamic form rule to change the related user to value in the current user field when checked. However, the dynamic form rules seem to only allow a related user field to be changed to the value in a numeric field. Is there a work around?
