Formula

I have 2 tables connected. In the parent table, I have a numeric field called Season and a numeric field called Number. In the child table, I have a field called First Season.  Currently, I have a field in the child with a drop down showing me the correct Number when Season = First Season.  However, I have to pick the only (and correct) choice to populate the field.  Can I replace that with a Formula?  Or auto populate the field?
