Hide a report link

Is there a way to check if a report link has zero records? The catch being, the report link is not from a child table. It's, in a sense, arbitrary. normally I just do a summary of children, but since this is not related, I'm wondering if there is a function that counts records in a report link.

    At EMPOWER they demo'd the concept of formula syntax to do a live query to say count, in a formula without a relationship. But no timeframe for  that was promised. . 

    So until then, you need a relationship.
