Essentially it is the record ID#.

And one more question. Does the coaches table have the user ID for the coach?

It has a Record ID# and a Contract Coach User (Text) field from the lookup table as well as a Contract Coach User formula field - ToUser([Contract Coach User (Text)]). There is also a Contract Coach User (User) formula field - ToUser([Contract Coach User (Text)]). I'm sure there was a reason for all of these but I've recently inherited this process and can't change key fields on the Contract Coaches table because it will affect so many other relationships.

Okay, as long as you are saying that the coaches table in fact has a user field do identify the coach then yes there's a way to do this without changing the key field of the coaches table.
I can post a traditional solution using a helper table and a new relationship but I believe this can also be done with the formula query. I think I would kind of like to know myself how to do this so let me mess around with that tomorrow and see if I can post a formula query solution.
