How to write a formula that says "if date/time field in field x has passed, then check box"

I have a formula checkbox and I want to write a formula that checks the box when the date/time in field X has passed. Can someone help me parse out this formula? Thanks in advance.

    You can have a field which is formula checkbox

    IF([My date/time field] < now (), true)
